Lyrics to Unwritten Tunes - Poetry and liturgy

It has Been a Long Time Coming

ADAM
My name is Adam
Look at the state of me
Naked
Guilty
Alienated
From my world
From my wife
From myself
Alienated from my God.

It wasn’t always like this you know
Oh no
I had it all
More than any of you ever had
More than anyone in history ever had
A garden
The garden
Such an inheritance
And a relationship with the one who made it and me
The purest man to God relationship ever
God walked with me in the garden
Oh yes, I had everything
Everything a human being could ever want or need.

But we
Myself and the companion God gave me
Thought we knew better
Thought we didn’t need God or His ways
Thought we could make our own decisions
Thought we could be like Him
Independence
That was our cry
And when we got the chance we took it
All for just the taste of a piece of fruit
Mind you can I tell you
This was the most beautiful fruit that man or woman has ever seen
And can I assure you
It was the most gorgeous taste that man or woman ever put in their mouths
But for just one momentary taste
For just one second of a thrill
We threw away eternity
Oh yeh, “sweet the sin
But bitter the taste in my mouth” ***
We were deceived
We were lied to
“You’ll be like Him”
“Surely you will not die”
Lied to
Deceived
Naked
Guilty
Hopeless
Damned!
Clinging on to something our Maker said to the serpent
“And I will put enmity between you and the woman
Between your offspring and hers
He will crush your head and you will strike his heal”
It is the only hope we have got
It is the only hope any of us have got!

***U2 - Running To Stand Still from Joshua Tree

YOU HAVE TO LAUGH (ABRAHAM)
Hi, I’m Abraham
I’m a man full of questions
Where am I going
He just told me to go
I knew where I was leaving
But have no idea where to go
I just went

How can this be
The things He tells me
I’m going to be the father of a nation
A nation?
My wife and I can’t even have a child
But He took me out one night
We just looked at the stars
“Like this” he said
“Your family will be like this,
Count them”
What do you mean count them?
You have to laugh
My wife does
But if it is true, then
I guess one of those stars is for you
But I can’t even imagine you
I cannot possibly understand

I’m a man full of questions
Where am I going?
I don’t know
You have to laugh
My wife laughs a lot
Children?
At her age!
But something tells me to keep on going
And up there somewhere
Some time
Some way
He will do it
Somehow I believe,
And he says he credits that to me as righteousness
I believe.
