The Darkness - Permission to Land
The Darkness covers the earth. It is everywhere. Take heavy metal guitar riffs and dress them in Glam Rock gear and you have a boy band for boys. Plenty of air guitar in bedrooms across the land! You would think that they are a modern Spinal Tap satire simply taking a hand out of us but the thing that they are taking most of is teenagers’ pocket money. It all smells like a whole lot of teen spirit and there is also the whiff of a great rock n roll swindle. However, songs like I Believe In A Thing Called Love are very well crafted and the obligatory guitar solos are fancy and flash. It is very good quality if 100% derivative. An explicit lyrics sticker on the cover is a warning of the obscene words too often screamed and as with the less intelligent or poetic songwriter utterly needlessly apart from adding to the butchness. The truth is that the shape, complexion, hair and clothes of a Boyonce will lead more kids towards eating disorders than this. It is neither safe nor scary, neither great nor bad.
