Caress & Collide - The word of God and the world we live in

Kevin Ponders

The Curse of Hearing the Bad News First
He looks at how evangelical preachers are always keen to tell us the bad news first and how that can be spiritual abuse. [ More ]

Prophecy and Foot and Mouth Disease
Kevin ponders the trendiness of all the words of knowledge that make Church spectacular across the UK and ponders why God failed to tell the farmers. [ More ]

Body or Soul
Kevin pondered. Why when it came to reaching out to others do the majority of conservative evangelicals concentrate on the soul rather than the body but when it comes to personal holiness and behavioural patterns they concentrate on the body rather than the soul. [ More ]

To Change Our Sense Of Fashion
Kevin pondered in the pew. Did Jesus die to change our sense of fashion? It seemed an incredibly petty thing to die in such agony for. Yet this was no petty thing to his followers. Kevin often felt the wrath of their stares and sensed their unhappiness at his appearance. [ More ]

Bearing False Witness
Kevin pondered in his flat. How do rumours begin? Was there a little fax machine somewhere that pumped out lies? He had no problems working out how rumours spread. People love gossip especially if it is about someone whom they disagree with or someone that is more popular than they are. [ More ]

To Be Sound
Kevin pondered what it was to be "sound". He did not quite understand the term but assumed that all he knew about it was that he wasn't. It seemed a pretty important thing in Northern Ireland evangelicalism. In fact, Kevin was beginning to conclude that it was the central tenant of that theological grouping. Every conversation seemed preoccupied with whether people were sound enough. [ More ]

Discipleship: Following Jesus Or A System And Control
Kevin pondered on the street. He was going to the garage to get a can of Diet Coke. He wasn't bluffed with all this macho Pepsi Max stuff! Anyway that is not what he was pondering. What he was pondering was why he couldn't look the prostitute in the eye who was hanging around his block of flats. That made him in turn ponder, discipleship because both were very intimately linked. [ More ]

The Pendulum Swings To Anarchy
Kevin pondered on some of his friends, or acquaintances as he preferred to call them. Friendship, here, could get him into a lot of trouble and people already thought he was doing drugs! No these acquaintances. they were the really really radical end of Belfast Christendom. They were free, so free that Kevin pondered if there was anything that could not be done. In short Kevin felt that their lives had got to a shallow world of sex and drugs and rock 'n roll. Again Kevin was pondering on why did Jesus die. [ More ]

Seconds To Change Your Years
Kevin pondered the seconds that change your years. He was spending a week in August with teenagers, trying to prepare them for their lives with a particular emphasis on the Christian faith. As he sat with many of these "potentials about to explode" he felt excited and afraid. They were people who could change the world, heal us from our 300 years of hatred, save us from the destruction of God's provisions. They were the people who were sitting on the edge of the wrong choices in love, ambition and pleasure. [ More ]

Easter Sunday Morning
Kevin pondered on his Church Choir and the resurrection and wondered why there was no link between the two. As he stared at them on this Easter Sunday morning Kevin pondered on whether or not this greying or blue rinse collection of old faithfuls had ever heard of the resurrection. If this was their resurrection expressions he really never did want to see their faces if Jesus was still dead. No Kevin pondered that this Church where he had attended every Sunday for most of his 26 years on earth was today colder and deader than any first century tomb outside first century Jerusalem.
